Matthew 7:13-29, on choosing wisely
Making a good choice
Matthew 7:13-29 comprises the following sections:
- Matthew 7:13-14, the narrow way and the broad way;
- Matthew 7:15, beware the wolf in sheep's clothing
- Matthew 7:16-20, judge a prophet by their fruit
- Matthew 7:21-23, crying ‘Lord, Lord’ is not enough
- Matthew 7:24-27, be a wise builder, build on the rock;
- Matthew 7:28-29, Jesus, an amazing teacher.
Having concluded its teaching on the commandments, the Sermon on the Mount then provides us with advice on moving forward. The way to life is hard to find and therefore our sources of ‘spiritual’ advice need careful checking. In the long run, the Sermon’s message will be worthless unless we act on it, for our constructs are only of any permanent value when they build upon a solid foundation.
