Matthew 5:6,  blessed are those who hunger and thirst

5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

(Matt 5:6 WEB)

They shall be filled

This next beatitude addresses those who have deep and unrequited yearning for laws, statutes and commandments that manifest the wisdom of God and ensure righteousness prevails. Some such people may be aware of little more than a deep sense that something is fundamentally wrong. However, others will have a better grasp that their emptiness is due to a lack of righteousness and can only be filled by God.

We all have a choice over how we direct our spiritual hunger and it is all too easy to direct it toward food that fails to satisfy. The folly and profanity of those around us can also leave us feeling empty. Yet, for those whose hunger drives them to seek their creator, whose hunger is for being right with God, there is the promise of being filled.

Jesus said “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35 WEB). When they step onto the way that God has prepared for them, then they need hunger and thirst no more.
